Air Guitar Nation er en dokumentarfilm om det år, hvor luftguitaren nåede til USA. Den fortæller om tilblivelsen af US Air Guitar Championships og deltagernes personlige historier, mens de kæmper om at blive den første amerikanske World Air Guitar Champion.
Hvert år i august samles tusindvis af fans i Finland, for at opleve verdens bedste luftguitarister battle mod hinanden i 60 sekunders imiteret berømmelse. I mange år var amerikaner ikke repræsenteret ved verdensmesterskaberne, men i New York begynder nogle entusiaster at konkurrere for sjov og inden længe er USA med i kampen om topplaceringerne...
